1 Address by Charles Fillmore, Sunday morning April 10th, 1910 SUBJECT: "The Faculties of the Mind, represented by the Twelve Disciples". 2 4 when there is so great a need of the very things that he told his disciples to do. But above all this message is to broaden our civilization. We are all looking for a larger and better civilization and the question which we are all asking is "How shall we bring this about? Now Jesus was the forerunner of a new civilization that had been promised to, the Jews for ages. That a Messiah who would be their king and their leader would come and take them back into the great promised land. They were looking for that Messiah and he cam in the personality of Jesus. Jesus proved that ae was in intimate relation with this interior or spiritual kingdom. He did not talk about a kingdom far away, or one that was a place, but the Kingdom of the Heavens. And rightly interpreted we get what might be called the omnipresence of spirit. We get the right realization of this new interpretation, that all that Jesus talked about was right here in our midst. That it was civilization for man based upon a development of the powers within him. Of the powers existing all about us. Now in this day we are making great discoveries in the earth and air. Principally in the air. We are told that we are going to conquer this realm which we call the heavens. The heavens are full of forcesMhat we can bring into the earth. That * iB JU8t wha* Jesus Christ told his disciples, to £o forth and tell the people about the Kingdom of the heavens. 3 Was he a material King? Did he tell them all the laws of electricity, etc? Did he discover the invisible cause of them? No he told them of the Kingdom of mind. But before we can comprehend thi® Kingdom of the mind as it is, it is necessary that we shall have certain mental faculties and knowledge. That is the starting poin£ of the new civilization. That is the beginning of the kingdom. The development in each one of us of the inherent, god-given faculties. We must know how these forces which seem so wonderful to us are controlled like Jesus Christ controlled them. So that we can say to the winds and waves, "Peace be still". And what manner of man is this that can speak to the elements and they obey him? It is the man of spirit, and that man of spirit is here within everyone of us , waiting to be brought forth. Then this history is to be taken not only in its general sense as the sending for th of twelve men to preach the doctrine of Jesus Christ, but it is the development of Jesus Christ in all the faculties of the mind. Now a careful study of the scripture will show that the names of each of these disciples has a meaning and those who investigate with spiritual understanding, spiritual inspiration, ha revealed to them that this is the history of the development of a higher consciousness in man. Instead of being simply an intellectual animal, man becomes a 4 spiritual being. He takes his place in the realm of masters. Now let us look into this a little as to these twelve disciples. You will notice that the^ were sent forth in pairs. Brothers, most of them . And this has its symhal in the realm of material forces. Dynamics has its positive and negative polls. So in mind hack of the forces of nature there are the two polls. Every faculty of the mind is paired with some other faculty. It is necessary to be balanced in order to do your work successfully, and in order to develop the wpiritual within you you must balance your faculties, and not become one-sided. So these disciples were sent forth in pairs. First we have Peter and Andrew. Now Peter was also named Simon. Jesus added that name Peter, which means a stone, or substance. The eternal substance of the invisible realm; the spirit. So Jesus said upon this foundation, this very substance of things invisible, he would build his church, or he would build the new kingdom, the new civilization that is to come into the world. Paul says that faith is the substance of the mind, the substance of the invisible things, and without faith you cannot get in touch with the Divine mind. And the first faculty to be brought into expression, the very foundation of your spiritual being is faith. You will notice that all through the teach ing of Jesus that faith was manifest. Ho you have 5 faith in the things you do not see? Do you believe that these visible things came forth from the invisible? If you do, you can have anything . If you have faith as a little mustard seed, just look what mighty things you can do. '8 in our work, which is all in the spiritual realm, we find it necessary to have faith before this new teaching which is now being pushed into the minds of men; can come into expression. "According to your FAITH, be it unto you". Then the brother of Peter was Andrew. Andrew means strength. It means integrity, hcntesty, and truth. That faculty in us that makes us steadfast Andrew was a well balanced man, well poised. Hot especially brilliant, but he did not have the ups and downs like Peter, denying truth one moment and teaching it the next. But he was well balanced. So we must bring forth spiritual strength. Do not think your strength depends upon ycur uscle. It depends upon your word of strength. Remember that in this ne^ kingdom, every manifestation has its representative in an idea. The kingdom of Jesus Christ is the kingdom of mind and all tits powers are in the words and thoughts and everything must resolve into words and thoughts. You cannot understand these things that I am talking about unless you understand this kingdom of mind. 6 Now James and John were brothers. We all know who John is. John is the one who rested his head upon the bosom of the Master. He i3 the one whom the master greatly loved. He represents, then, the faculty of Love. James was the man to whom was referred various matters that came up. He was what we interpret to be representative of wisdom. Then we have here/together, love and wisdom. I would also call your attention to the fact that each of these faculties of the Divine mind are expressed in the mind of the individual and they also have their material manifestation in the body. Love has its manifestation in the heart, and we are told that at the heart is the great brain that carries on in its interior sub-consciousness, all the different functions of the organism. Then love and wisdom must be united in the heart. There is the expression in man of these two great faculties, and faith has its center in the top of the head. Then we have next, philip and Bartholomew. Philip is power, and Bartholomew immagination. Some of these faculties have to be discerned from the acts words or character of the individual as it is brought out in the scripture. Bartholomew seems to have discernment. He saw things that the others could not see. You will remember that Jesus saw him under the fig tree, and he acknowledges that he saw Jesus before he really saw him outwardly. This has a great part td play in the development of 7 man's mind. Philip is power. Hb is the one that puts the brakes on the forces of man, or sets them free. Now there is within your consciousness something that will control every energy of the mind. We hear people telling again and again, "Oh I cannot control my emotions, I cannot control myself. When I get angry, I fly all to pieces". You have within you the controlling power and all you have to do when these emotions begin to play in your consciousness, is to say "I am spirit, and spirit is power. I have the power of the spirit. I have dominion and mastery of myself through the power of spirit". Now from the beginning we are told man was given dominion over all things. Did God make a man and not give him the faculties that would enable him to control his appetites and emotions? Certainly not. Then we have dominion, the power, and all that is necessary is to get the power idea into expression. Think about power and not weakness. Do not think or speak about lack of power. Do not say "I cannot control myself". Say "I am master of myself, I AM the master". As you use these words you feel the mastery, not only over yourself, but over your surroundings. When all these faculties are developed as they were in Jesus Christ, it will give us control over all the elements. We will be able to say to the winds and waves "Peace be still" and they will obey. If we want rain, we will speak the word and it will 8 come to pass. Elijah found this power in a degree hut it was not balanced with the other twelve. Now Thomas and Mathew come next. You all know what Thomas represents. He is the doubter . The one, as we would say here in Missouri, who has to be showed. Who does not want to take anything on anybody's say-so, and that is what we call the reason. This does not mean it is a failure, but it is to be educated. All these faculties have to be educated and instructed. That is the sending out of the word. Mathew was the will. He was the tax collector. James the son of Alpheus, and Thaddaeus. James is given as ambition. Every energy is represented in a man's cranium, as signified by the different "Bumps" on his head. But you will remember there were other faculties sent out. The secondary movements of the mind There is no limit to its capacity, but it works through these various agents. Simon the Canaanite is zeal, and sometimes our zeal if it is not balanced with the other faculties ties us up. "We are rore zealous than wise". Here, then, we have to find the other poll which balances our zeal. Judas Iscariot is the last. He is the one who betrayed the Master. Now he in his highest, is appropriation. In mentality ie is put down as acquisitiveness, and he is not an evil faculty. He was one who was called, byt Jesus said he was pose 9 essed of the Devil. So each of these facilties are often possessed of adverse thought. Did not Satin enter into Peter and cause him to deny the savior? The adverse or the opposite of truth, spiritual understanding, right relation of the faculties is often found and the work of man is to purify, to lift up and to spiritualise them. So this faculty of appropriation, or acquisitiveness, becomes, when possessed with the devil of selfishness, an alien, or betrays the Christ, and it apparently dies in that phase of consciousness. But this God-given power of appropriation in man remains, and each of like all the rest of these faculties, is good at its core. They are good in spirit and the redepptive power of J<5sus Christ will finally come to Judas. It laust be so. Judas himself drawj, and when we wish to prepare to draw to ourselves the guidance of the infinite mind, the powers of the spirit, we draw these faculties through the Judas. It is through praise and prayer. The positive poll,or this great Judas faculty is in the very top of the head. That place to which man looks whenever he prays, and the negative poll is in the life center, or generative center, and these two forces are either pulling us up or down, and we can balance ourselves by knowing that the real kingdom, the real things that we all desire, are in the mind. So Jesus laid down law to those who have great appropriation or great desire to grow. 10 We would not grow at all, but would live in the. same state of consciousness if this Judas faculty was not ours. It is the facilty that causes us to grow and go forward. Bless your Judas, but spiritualise it. Put out all selfishness. Say to the spirit of the Father, "Give me all things. Give me under the law,—which is seek ye first the Kingdom of God and its righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you" Now I might go on and interpret for you the message of Jesus to his disciples to go not in the way of the Gentiles or of the Samaratins. He told them there, not to mix their doctrines. Not to get out into the material ways. The Samaratins, you will remember, were people of many religions. Do not mix your truth with error. Be true to the teachings of Jesus Christ and all things will work out right, but if you rise, you must let loose of the old. If you try to ride two horses you will find that failure results. Hold all your faculties, all your thoughts, hold the whole world in ipirit and you will not be slow about spiritual interpretation if you are true to the spirit. If you think about everything as having back of it uxkaxing the spiritual con sciousness and you will see things. All tho se who are seeking truth who ha vs been quickened by the spirit are on the way to attainment. Most of us are trying to bring the ply sical into the spiritual. They are trying to retain all that they have accumulated, and the states of mind and body into this Kingdom. Now the fact is that the Kingdom is sufficient in itself. It till provide all things, and not just a few things. It is not necessary for us to go out and make money to support ourselves doing the work of God. God is the Lord of the world. God is the one idea upon which all money is founded. Get hold of that idea and you will be supplied. But people say, "Don't we have to have these material things to be comfortable?" Yes, but how do they come into expression? Through some energy of the invisible. I once heard of a man who kept warm all winter with a single bucket of coal. He kept it in the cellar and when he got cold he would go down and carry it up. Then he would carry it back, and so on until he was perfectly warm. Now there was the development , or an expression of the law. It was not necessary to burn up that coal and warm himself for one day, but through expressing the warmth within himself he made it last. How many interior forces within us if we would turn them loose in ourselves, would do mighty works for us, and that is where man is getting to right now. We are working in this outer realm thinking we are going to get satisfaction and comfort, but we will not do it. Man then, must be developed; must be broad. We must seek this inner ■ Is. it' v1 ;.T' ..'V oil kingdom ao that all things will he added unto us. We will heal as Jesus told his disciples. We will cast out these deamons or errors of mind which are founded on the lack of understanding, and raise them up into the consciousness that it is ours to carry into expression now.
